ECG
A quick, non-invasive test that records the heart’s electrical activity and can support evaluation of rhythm-related concerns.

What to know
An electrocardiogram, or ECG, records the electrical activity of the heart using small electrodes placed on the skin. It is quick, painless and can help clinicians assess heart rate, rhythm and certain electrical patterns.
ECG findings are interpreted together with symptoms, examination and other cardiac investigations where needed.
Preparation
Usually no fasting is required. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the chest, arms and lower legs. Avoid applying heavy lotions or oils to the chest on the day of the test where possible.
